my MacBook m2 normally has about 90gb space of its 256gb ssd. I am on the tahoe beta, not the latest. I have only 22gb space so I cant even install the latest beta to see if it fixes it.

one thing I notice is that in my library folder, there is a folder called group containers which is 76gb. one folder is one drive. I have right clicked the one drive (my work) and pressed free up space. right clicking on one drive says there's only 1.3mb of files. however the file in group containers UBFT346G).OneDriveStandaloneSuite is 76.71gb.

the next big file is group.com.apple.chronod 36.52gb.

group.com.apple.chronod is an OS file for widgets and stuff, but it seems like it's grown far beyond the normal size limits for that utility (I don't know what the normal file size should be).

The onedrive thing looks like a corrupted download. I've had this happen with Google Drive and Photos (file is given a temporary suffix while downloading, file keeps failing to download, so it downloads another copy with a different suffix). I would double check that I have the files I want backed up online or stored on a different drive (a different drive to stop any instant-download shenaningans) and then delete the OneDriveStandaloneSuite.

As a first step with stuff like this, I boot into safe mode, give it a minute, then reboot. I have no idea what safe mode does behind the scenes, but it often results in freeing disk space.

I searched on the OneDrive file and found a bunch of folk with a similar issue, so those would be worth a try.

unfortunately the one drive wasnt the culprit. weirdly MacOS reported its size as being massive in gb, but then in brackets a smaller amount. I removed my Mac from the one drive and the folder is now only 53mb but still my Mac only has 22.31 gb. I have installed nothing since I had about 90gb, in fact the only thing of note thats installed is civ vii.

the chronod folder is definitely massive though, 36.79gb, not sure whether to delete.

tried the safe mode, didnt fix it for me, but thanks for the suggestion.

If it were me, and it's not obvs., I'd save the folder, delete the file, and then logout/login or reboot. ime, macOS is pretty resilient.

For reference, my chronod folder is 1.5Mb, and 1.4Mb of that is the chrono.sql file. I do have Show Widgets switched off in Prefs/Desktop & Dock – both checkboxes.

So I deleted Civ Vii to get enough space to install the latest tahoe updates. and the chronic folder issue still big, but ive noticed my available space is trickling up. and I literally mean trickling. its going up .01gb a second. but its steady so I am wondering if it will keep going.

going to leave it a few hours and after that im going to take your advice and delete the folder.

yay its definitely Chronod that is reducing. in the window thats open its not changing and showing 36.99gb even though at the bottom of that window is were I can see the space rising. it was 60 something, its now 75gb. when I right click on Chronod I get 25gb now.

weird.

Chronod now 97.8mb !

Drive space 97.23gb. have to reinstall civ vii so I'll still be down a wee bit on what I was but its plenty of space.
