this I why I don't understand Apple's ridiculous base model specs kind of shoots Apple's branding in the foot - 256GB is going to be a headache limitation to even gray-haired grandmas. Someone thinks they are buying into Apple quality only to run out of space in a couple of months.

yes all my files are on exterior drives - that doesn't mean the people who would buy this deal will understand that.

Yeah, hopefully this can be the new starting price. Double the RAM of previous generation and then taking $200 off? I snatched this up so fast and got the 512 storage version. When m1 Airs went fanless, I was skeptical because of the 2015 MacBook, but this thing powers through tasks and barely gets warm. Even when gaming the heat is very mild, although I will put it on a cooling fan for good measure on long term hardware health. I am more than pleased with this laptop coming from a 2017 i5 iMac, and a 2010 Core 2 Duo MacBook before that.

I suddenly lost interest in the up coming low cost MacBook. Word around the campfire is it will be $599. In terms of value, for 2 C-note more you get a lot more computer in the 13" M4.

Apple.com's MacBook Airs just got cheaper. I was looking at a 13" 24GB RAM / 512HDD and it went from $1399 last week to $1299 this week. It's cheaper than Best Buy and Amazon for the same machine.

EDIT: Then I clicked a different link and see it cheaper on Amazon at 1199. Shrug. I give up on knowing the cheapest price

You think Apple isn't doing this on purpose.

What are those grey-haired grandmas going to be storing that uses up all that space? Movies and music come from streaming services now days, Photos are stored in the cloud.

Creative professionals need more space, sure, but there’s certainly a lot of casual users for whom 256GB is perfectly fine now days. I’d argue that 16GB RAM is the bigger limitation in the longer term.

Totally agree. I have an over 4 year old M1 MBA with a 256GB drive and have 127GB free. I don't really do anything special other than occasionally clean out clutter and move some of the stuff I want to keep to one of the external drives on my mini. I get a laugh at all these experts that seem to think their use case is the only one that exists on the planet. FWIW, my previous MBA had a 128GB drive and while I had to be a lot more cognizant of the free space left, it never really caused a problem either. But 256GB seems absolutely spacious in comparison.

I guess it depends upon what you do (or don't do)!

You are making a sweeping generalization. I have been using 256GB on my base M2 MBA for three years without a problem. Barely used half the available storage. We have a family iCloud plan ( 5 members) that provides 2 TB of cloud storage to share, so I have documents, photos, etc.. optimized to the cloud. It works great. Never a problem.

Tempted... made the mistake to buy a 256GB and 8GB Ram Air... its not useable anymore.

Yep… you’re storing your photo library and iOS device backups locally, which can easily be on the cloud (or cloud-optimised) instead if you wanted the space back. Same for your messages and documents.

Not being so constrained, I definitely enjoy both :)
