Have any of you used this feature yet?

I did some research and then experimented with this setting. What I found is interesting. I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but using this option with give your iPhone 11 Pro / Max 24mp photos! It will not work when using night mode or if you are too close to the subject. However, I did test it today while sitting in my truck and took a photo of the console cup holders and that was 25” away and got a 24mp image. What it does I believe is use both the 1x & 2X cameras together and one is downsampled to match the other camera.

after taking a photo, then touch the photo to look at the photo, you should see a box with a Star in the upper right hand corner of the screen just below the edit button, that indicates that extra image data was collected. Touch edit, then go to crop, then pinch the image to see the full frame within the crop box. Next move over to the magic wand to auto edit and your done, a 24mp image (23.94mp). It will be a higher MB file size as well, up to 12mb. It’s best used during the day, or well lit indoor locations. I added screen shot data and samples. I use Big Photo, available at the App Store to view data and resize images. So far I haven’t seen any difference when shooting video.

I tested it out and you are right. It is reorienting the photos as being around 5000 x 4000 pixels which is in the 22MP neighbourhood. This is likely why Deep Fusion doesn’t work with auto framing feature.

I also found an interesting site after reading this stating that the extra data is deleted after30 days. Therefore, you should “zoom” out and save the 24 mp photo before you lose the ability to do so.

I did more testing and I have come to the conclusion that, unless you must take the widest shot possible, it is better to take a wide lens shot then zoom out. It is not quite as wide as ultra wide, but it is much sharper due to 2X pixels and it has less distortion at the extremities. It’s like an extra lens for iPhones.

It’s definitely a nice feature.. having the option to use the extra image data or not is handy. I’m glad you see what I saw when using this feature.

How do you see the extra area captured???
I tried to insert a 10 second video, but look at this photo. When the photos outside the frame is on and after taking a photo, view the photo and look for the box in the corner. If that icon is visible, touch edit, then go to crop, then pinch either inside the crop or outside to see more of the image that is outside the frame. Then save it. If the box with star does not appear at the top, the camera didn’t capture any extra image detail.

A snap out the window, this one is 18mp because of the perspective adjustment. Apple got creative on this new iPhone 11 Pro. I’ll be using this feature on every shot from now on when it works. 04BD4AA9-4362-446C-A615-61834B3D5EC1.jpeg

So when does it capture outside the frame? I see some of my photos have it and some don't.
From what I’ve noticed with my testing, it only works when it’s bright enough in a room or outside, it doesn’t work in night mode. So if night mode gets turned on, Capture images outside the frame function is not used. The scene has to be bright enough to work so night mode doesn’t automatically turn on. I’m still testing distance with the 1x & 2X cameras.
