Hey I just bought my mac last week and I need to take a screenshot of something. Does mac allow you to do this with a pre-installed program or do i need to download something first? How do i go about taking a screenshot on a mac is my basic question. thanks for helping!

Whole screen: Cmd-Shift-3.
Selectable portion of screen: Cmd-Shift-4, then drag to select.
Single window: Cmd-Shift-4, then space, then click the window.

Have fun with that, Goldcard! Welcome to being a happy Mac user.

unfortunately the one thing you can't take a screenshot of is the DVD Player window while it's playing a DVD. If you ever find yourself stuck in that position, Snapz Pro from Ambrosia (it's on the guides page linked above) is a great screencapture app :)

You can take a screencap of a VLC window though.
