Taking an avi file off of a burnt dvd

I used Finder to put 5 movies onto a dvd. When I insert the dvd into my computer, I cannot simply click and drag a movie file from the finder window to my desktop.

How do I get these movies onto my computer without doing a time-consuming procedure (such as using Handbrake which takes over an hour to copy the movie file, except with lower quality)?

Yes, for future burning, I'll do that, but for my current burnt dvd's is there a way?

I just clicked and dragged the avi files from my movies folder to the blank disc folder in finder and then clicked on the burn symbol to burn it.
