The LED dimmable desk lamp is another great LED desk lamp from TaoTronics even though it is technically a step down from the previous model I reviewed. Included in the excellent packaging are the lamp itself, a base section, power supply, cleaning cloth and user guide.
The first LED lamp I reviewed was an all plastic affair that had a mixture of LED types to provide a variety of lighting moods. I was surprised that this lower end model actually features an aluminium arm that adds both strength and a slightly higher premium feel. The lamp comes fully assembled alongside the power supply, user guide and cleaning cloth. This lamp stands 40cm tall with the lamp section extending 25cm when flipped out. The base is a good weight with dimensions of 18cm by 12cm - the power supply is then attached to the rear of this base and you are good to go. The cable is around 1.5m long so a good length for a desk lamp.
The lamp folds in two sections, just above the base so you can angle it forward and at the top of the lamp arm so you can flip the lamp out to illuminate a larger area. The lamp doesn't swivel but you can simply turn base so this is a feature that isn't required. The lamp head itself does not articulate which is a shame but not surprising since it is quite large to house the 31 LEDs. Unlike the higher specification model, this lamp only features white LEDs and therefore can't replicate the 'mood' lighting of that model but it does have enough lighting control to remain both practical and flexible. Control is achieved by a capacitive touch panel with three buttons; a night light, a power on/off/brightness button and a 60 minute sleep timer. While there is no tactile feedback, these buttons are sensitive and work very well. There are no lighting modes as such, the power button works in a cycle and a first tap turns on the low light level. Tapping this again gives a medium brightness level while a further tap turns on the brightest level. A another tap of this button turns the lamp off. This is a nice level of flexibility and the night time button is a nice addition that effectively turns on a single LED at the lowest setting giving a dim glow that works well as a night light
The 60 minute sleep timer is a great addition, very handy for those using this as a lamp for reading at night although the one issue with this is there is no visual indicator that the timer has been enabled so you should be deliberate in your actions to ensure you have touched the button and this can be cancelled at any time by tapping it again.
Using LEDS, this lamp consumes a total of up to 6W offering good cost savings alongside a practical amount of lighting. There was no sign of any distracting buzzing during my testing, regardless of the mode or brightness selected and lighting remained steady at all times with no flickering.
There doesn't seem much you can consider when reviewing a desk lamp but I was surprised how flexible this is and it is now a classy addition to my office desk. This is a simple and effective lamp and the only minor criticism I have is the omission of a sleep timer indicator. If you have issues in finding just the right kind of lighting for your desk or just appreciate a level of flexibility then this lamp comes highly recommended. I got this one from Amazon UK.
