Using Activator you can add tap gestures to unlock. I have mine set to doubletap the status bar to unlock, but you can also do the clock or sliderbar, or even single tap.

Is there anyway to use a swipe or tap gesture to awake your iPhone from sleeping mode? (without having to use the home or power button)

Nope, because the touchscreen is disabled while the device is asleep to prevent you from constantly turning it on by accident with a slight touch.

Even if there were a Cydia tweak to change that, you probably wouldn't want to.
