Target Disk Mode security

Hi - While I've used Macs my entire life, I was recently introduced to Target Disk Mode as a way to save my data to another Mac before needing to erase the drive. While certainly helpful in that case, I was shocked at how easy it is for anyone with a computer and thunderbolt cable to get access to anyone's hard drive, so long as FileVault isn't enabled. What's the point of even having a login password? Am I missing something here??
