So I have a 2010 iMac, and i've read the tech spec page on Apple and it says specifically mini DP to mini DP only (page is outdated I'm guessing).

There have been success with DP to mini DP.

Now I'm asking if it would work with other ports? like DVI to mini DP? Or is it mandatory (mini)DP to (mini)DP sort of deal?

Anyone have any experience?

There are boxes from kanex and others that allow you to input HDMI into your 2010 iMac
 
That awfully pricey, compared to just grabbing a DP to mini DP.
