Tascam US-144 mkII: MIDI sync for Garageband?

I recently purchased a new Tascam US-144 MKII. It seems to be in perfect working order, and upon getting my entire setup in order, it appears from the lit "MIDI in" LED that the unit is receiving the signal from my drum machine. However, when using Garageband I cannot for the life of me make the program's recording BPM sync up. Any suggestions?
