Greetings internet.
I just pulled the trigger on a certified 512gb at Best Buy because my 2012 MBP is out of hard drive and soon to be obsoleted. I also have a Dell laptop that I use for work at least 1 day a week. Unfortunately, the Dell dock I have doesn't have MacOS drivers available, so I am in the market for a dock that will work for both. Absolute needs:
  • Power delivery for either laptop (Unsure of specific requirements on Dell, shouldn't be more than the MBP)
  • HDMI and/or Displayport - Have a 32" Samsung with both options. Not planning to dual monitor, this seems to be big enough w/ multiple windows
  • USBA for Logitech dongle, external CD burner, external powered hard drive at a minimum
  • Ethernet
It appears the power delivery automatically jumps the dock up to the $125+ range. I don't really know what else I should be considering "needs." CalDigit's looks really nice but it's really pricey. Anybody using anything else that can verify it's compatible with both OS platforms? Appreciate all input. Thanks!

At $299, it's definitely not a cheap option, but I really like the OWC TB3 Dock. It seems to work well with TB3-enabled Windows PCs but there's not a huge market of those and Lenovo has had issues with their TB implementation.
Otherwise, you're probably looking at a USB-C dock.

Thanks. Humor my ignorance if you wouldn't mind, what do you lose by being USB-C but not properly Thunderbolt 3?

I'll add a secondary question.... does it make a difference that I plan on leaving the laptop closed when docked?
