tbMBP 13 external monitor issues on wake from sleep

When I wake my 13" tbMBP from sleep, my external monitor frequently just shows white noise. I have to unplug and replug my Apple multiport adapter to get it to work. A minor inconvenience, but any ideas why this is happening?
