Do you use an AV with your TBMP? Which software and why? I have always used Sophos' free version as the footprint is tiny but I wonder whether there is better out there and it's hard to trust online reviews as they always sound so sponsored.

I do not use Anti-Virus on my Mac. What I do use is Little Snitch to see what program wants to call home and what I also plan to use is https://www.littleflocker.com.
