June 23, 2011—Valve, creators of bestselling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced today that after four years and over 200 updates, its popular and critically-acclaimed online action game Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is now Free To Play (F2P).
The F2P announcement comes as part of the "Über Update". Released today, it is the largest content pack delivered to TF2 since it shipped in 2007.

New players interested in experiencing what PC Gamer calls "the most fun you can have online" will have access to training and offline practice modes, so they can hone their skills before jumping into the ever-expanding TF2 universe.
To celebrate the launch of the Über Update, Valve has released "Meet the Medic," the latest in its series of TF2 animated shorts.

TF2 is now Free to Play for PC & Mac players via Steam.

The game was worth it two years ago when I bought it on the Orange Box for $9.99 on Steam. I say play the free version for a few days then pay for the premium account.

This really is a fun game. I've never been 'into' first person shooters, especially on the Internet, but something about this game makes it fun. I've really gotten into it. AND it runs great even on non-top of the line hardware.

This is great! I preordered this back in 2007 as soon as it was available and played the beta. It's an outstanding game that sucked probably around 1000 hours from my life. Even if Valve stopped updating I'd keep playing (even the vanilla TF2 is still fun).

Everyone needs to get this game. So long that you have the specs (very low on Windows, a bit higher on OSX) and the storage space for it. I believe it's around 10gb these days. Quite a bump from the little 4gb game I downloaded all those years ago!

Eh, there is no premium version. The full game is now free forever. What used to have a price tag now has none.
