I am currently attending a radio technology course. We continuously work on radio sets that are sometimes used as manpacks by the Army. In order to learn how to operate them we work in close proximity to the sets and their antennas.

The antennas are generally whip type or long rods. Such as these :

The radio sets generally output around 25-50W. Can that possibly cause damage to my iPhone?

There's a hell of a lot of shielding in modern devices. For one thing, I don't think the spectrum radio antennas run on impacts your phone at all, and second of all, even if it could impact your phone, I think the shielding in your phone would be enough to prevent it. I've seen iPhones being blasted by powerful EMPs and it's only made temporary issues, like the screen acting weird for a bit then everything back to normal.

Where did you see the EMP effects?

You always gonna see interference at some stage.. The only problem we should be caring about, is "how little" interference.. All that shielding in newer phones would be there for something..

It may be worse for older phones.. Hardware gets better, more protections in newer phones from chips, radiation (EMR) etc.. so makes sense older phones that don't that that much would be more of an problem..
