If you get a weird look from your cashier, just tell them to hit credit on their register. I've had to do this many times when using my PayPass cards to date at Circle-K. Generally employees at McD's and Whole Foods have seen it before, but Gas stations seem to be the worst when it comes to cashier training.
Walgreens I hear trains their employees well, and same can be said about Target (though Target will not turn on their NFC and Chip & PIN until early 2015).
