telus, mbp and iphone as modem?

i live in the out backs of british columbia and is stuck with dial up unless i spend alot of money, and then monthly installments, which are the same as my dial up, i can not read through the forums because it takes hours, can i use a iphone 3gs as a motem for my mbp without jail braking? i need a cell phone too and it would be so nice in my life to use both, telus would be my carrier and they want me to sign up but give no answers as to connecting my laptop to the internet through my iphone, can i do it? are the plans worth while? or will i be hosed?
