'Temp Internet Files'/Running Items in Browser

Hey all, somewhat simple question (I think). Is there a way to run file directly in the browser?

For example, in Windows, you can click on a DOC file, and it will give you the option to Run, Save As, or Cancel. Pressing Run will open the document directly from the site in Word, putting the file in Temporary Internet Files instead of your Downloads folder.

Is there a way to do this in Mac (Safari OR Firefox), or can this not happen the way Mac OS X is written (for security, perhaps)?
