temp move to europe - what do I do to use iphone?

I am planning on upgrading to the new iphone from my 3gs, but am moving to Europe for 3 or 4 months later. How do I get a local plan there other than unlocking? What do I do in the interim with my ATT plan, though I want to keep my current number?

Is ATT helpful at all in these situations?
