Mid 2012, MBP
10.8.5
2.5 GHz
8 GB

Randomly, it seems, my MBP has been running between 50C and 60C just from browsing on the internet. (I use istat menus.) Sometimes, it's gotten up to over 70C.

kernel_task is sitting around 1GB and safari web content is currently at 1.6GB and has gotten up to 2GB.

Same story with Chrome.

I feel like the temp is not usually this high. So, how can I figure out what's causing the high temps?

Thanks in advance!

This is actually normal for me on Chrome. It just is really bad managing resources. Safari is strange though. Are you watching movies, animations, or running flash player?

no, this is just from basic browsing.

I'm wondering if this is a dying hard drive.

So, I've seen where a hard drive that is filling up can cause similar problems.

Thoughts on percentage of hard drive available for optimum performance?

It shouldn't be from the hard drive. As long as you have 5% left, you're fine. I would ask what other plugin are running. Try installing "click to plugin" for safari and Chrome and see if that helps.
