Template Woes...

So, I thought that I would make my resume/CV look all snazzy using a special template on pages and it's been downhill since then. Whenever I try to save it as a word document (I don't have the Word programs on my mac) to send to professors etc. the formatting goes completing off. Is this typical!?? Is there any way I can resolve it?
I feel like I'm better off just re-writing the whole darn thing in a normal pages document... :(

You can continue to edit it in whatever format you like - but send it in PDF format - this way you can be sure it will display exactly as you intend it to... and it can't easily be edited (by the receiver).
 
I don't have that option...all I have is Word and iWork.
I'm sorry- I'm totally computer illiterate. Do I need to download a program for this??
