how can i unlock it to use in south america for about a month, then when i get back to the states, use it on verizon again? its a 32gb verizon on 6.1.3. thanks!

Ask Verizon to unlock it, put in a local sim from wherever you are going and then take that sim out when you want to use it on Verizon again.

To avoid getting any accidental international roaming charges make sure you take out the Verizon sim that comes with the phone for roaming before you go out of the US.

I thought Verizon didn't have sim cards? Sorry for my ignorance. I don't pay attention to these details since I'm a long term AT&T customer.

ok, so i go to verizon, and have them unlock it? and then can i use it on verizon when i get back? or will i have to use the vodaphone sim still?
thanks.

They do use them for LTE phones, and for other phones like the iPhone 4S they have a sim slot for international roaming on GSM networks. On the 4S it comes with a verizon sim that does nothing in the US on the verizon network, the phone works just fine without it, it is just used when you are out of the country and want to roam on GSM networks. However if you don't want to pay the ridiculous prices verizon charges for international roaming you can always ask them to unlock it and then you can use any foreign sim in it, AT&T and T-Mobile sims still won't work though.

Yep, just call them and tell them you will be going overseas for vacation and want them to unlock it for you. Then when you get to South America buy a sim from whatever carrier you want down there pop it in, and when you come back to the US just remove the sim that you got in South America and the phone will go back to Verizon automatically.

Sweet. Thanks for explaining that. It makes sense now. All the times I read or heard people say that Verizon doesn't have sims, they were referring to the Verizon network in America. Thanks again!

Why not give them a call to confirm? Or it's easier to post here and wait for an unofficial response?
