Temporarily disable dock pop up

I like to have the application dock auto hide on my mac book pro, but I also have a couple applications that require me to click near the bottom of the window. Is it possible to temporarily disable the dock from appearing while I move the mouse near the bottom of the screen, perhaps like it's possible to disable the magnification with one of the modifier buttons?

You could move the Dock to one side, rather than the bottom.

I've always preferred pinning my dock to the left side (although I think most other right-handed folks pin on the right side).

A couple years ago I started pinning it to a corner and have been hooked ever since.
