temporary move EU iPhone5 to US Carrier while waiting for 5S to appear

I have a colleague moving to the US from Europe in the next few days to take up a position here. He is interested in purchasing a 5S once it is available, however is wondering how he might be able to use his current iPhone 5 in the meantime. I would imagine one thing he he has to be careful about is not to get locked into a contract that would constrain him from upgrading once the 5S comes out

what are his options for this interim period?
