So I noticed my MBP runs about 4C cooler when it's running off battery than while charging. Probably the heat from the excess energy, but it's still a lot. Maybe something for you people using them on your lap all the time?

Perfectly normal and yes it is due to the dissipated heat from the charge cycle taking place while the connector is plugged in. I doubt 4C will make much difference to someones lap but it is a valid point.

What he said.

Charging takes current makes heat.

PLUS when your machine is disconnected from mains power, the CPU, hard disk and backlight are nicked down a notch to enhance battery life. There may be other economies coming into play, too: maybe WiFi power, perhaps GPU mode (depending on your model), etc etc.

I'm mildly surprised the difference isn't greater than 4C.
