Terminal and Activity Monitor

People always say to look at Terminal and Activity Monitor to check for any suspicious behavior. But what exactly should I be looking for? If I was indeed hacked or if there was any activity on my mac that wasn't mine, what are some red flags to be looking out for on either of those applications?
