At some point using my macbook, I get to a point where every new terminal window results in a blank terminal screen without any prompt. I use "Force Quit" to force quit everything except for Finder, but when I open a new Terminal, I see a stuck terminal in both iTerm2 and the Terminal.app. When I try to restart, my screen blacks out and i see the cursor only, forcing me to have to force shutdown.

After rebooting unsafely, terminal works again. How can I stop/get rid of this inconsistent state without having to force shutdown?
