Terminal issue

Running Mavericks 10.9.4 and trying to eliminate the startup sound with the following line entered in Terminal:
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80
After pressing Enter, the following line appears:
Password:
However Terminal will not allow my attempt to enter a password from the keyboard.

Any thoughts on the subject will be appreciated. Thanks for looking...

Terminal issue

It will. Just type it and press enter. It does not show up on the screen even behind asterisks but it'a there.
