I'm a college student and I noticed the other day that if I'm on my college network this Carlys iPhone thing pops up in terminal (I don't know the structure of the macOS terminal, excuse my ignorance). If I disconnect from my college network it goes back to my name (like I assume it should be).

I don't know Carly.. I don't think I've ever met a Carly. Anybody have any idea what this is or why it exists?

That Carlys-iPhone line there is what is called your "hostname" and it looks like the college has their DHCP server setup to assign that as the hostname. Not a problem at all.

@xb2003 Your college network DHCP server isn't just giving you an IP in this case. It is also telling your computer to rename itself to the hostname "Carly's iPhone". That's stupid. Tell your local network admins to fix whatever is wrong with their network config. ^_^
