Hi, I know very little about the Terminal app and Unix. On the terminal window what does the numbers before the username mean? how do I change that?

when I start the terminal the window displays this:
----------

Last login: Thu Apr 2 17:31:20 on ttys000
dbec92412:~ vic$ -

----------

what does "dbec92412" mean?

Thanks

The default Terminal prompt in OX 10.5 is:
<computer-name>: <current-directory><user>$

The computer name can be changed in System Preferences->Sharing->File Sharing.

If you don't use Terminal very often, I can't imagine why you'd want to customize the prompt, but there's some decent info on doing that here.

I Asking this because, my "computer name" which doesn't seem to be "dbec92412" changed somehow for some reason. I don't remember naming my computer that way.

Thanks for the info.

got it, turns out that was my ip address in Hex format.

Thanks for the info
