recently my terminal has slowed right down on connecting. even to local hosts in my LAN...

i initiate the connection and it's just painfully slow, after maybe 30sec to a minute the login prompt appears.

i cleaned out my .ssh/known_hosts file... hrmm

any ideas?

Check the following file for unneeded/unwanted content:

Code:
~/.profile

This file is loaded every time the shell starts. Extra stuff in there may be gumming up your shell loading.

for *every* host?

Are you ssh-ing to IPs or domain names? Try IP to avoid a DNS lookup.

Ping times reasonable? (well under one second)

can you 'dig' or 'traceroute' the remote guy?
