Thinking about a tethered jailbreak. Of course the downside is if the iPhone ever gets turned off you've got to be close to your computer to reboot.

Is there really ever a need to turn off your iPhone? If not then what other issues are there with a tethered jailbreak?

Yes, when you get onto an airplane, you need to turn off your phone or when you install new apps or package from Cydia that your phone needs to be rebooted.

it depends on your situation. For me I have my laptop at home, and I am at my PC all day at work. So it is very rare I am not near a computer that I cant boot my phone from. I am liking my jailbroken iOS5 so much it is worth it for me.

So far, other than MyWi all the Cydia apps I have downloaded in the past required a respring, not a reboot. Sure, some do but once they're loaded and the iPhone has been rebooted that should be it, I'd think.

I've always placed my iPhone in airplane mode rather than turned it off when flying.
