I read that if a jailbroken iphone reboots, it will lose it's jailbreak,

will I lose the jailbreak when I turn my phone off after each call?

would I lose my jailbreak if the battery completely drains, & when I attempt to turn it on it does not come on, & needs a recharge?

what exactly is tethered vs untethered & how do I know if my iphone I bought off ebay is tethered or not?
i read that an untethered jailbroken iphone will not lose it's jailbreak if it turns off for any reason. Does this mean most are tethered?

A tethered jailbreak is when you need to use redsn0w to get it working again. So whenever you restart, turn off your phone and when the battery dies you need to use redsn0w to get it back working again. The reason for that is because it is a tethered jailbreak. To tell which one is which is pretty obvious and that is turn off your phone and see if it reboots back up normally.

so if I get a jailbroken iphone off ebay, & find it is tethered, how would I set it up for an untethered jailbreak? I would also like it to be unlocked, so I can use a t-mobile or some other pay as you go plan.

how do I decipher untethered iphones from tethered ones on ebay? are there certain IOS versions & programs that do untethered jailbreaks? what else should I look for in specs listings besides the word untethered?

you probably can't since it would need the SHSH from older firmwares. Usually a phone that is on a tethered jb is because someoe missed the jb train and now they want to jb but for the fw the phone has, it can only be tethered. Usually later on the untethered jb come out, but it can go from weeks to many months sometimes

That depends solely on the Baseband.

Firmware (fw) vers and whatever else info they can tell you

are there certain IOS versions & programs that do untethered jailbreaks?
the latest fw can only be tethered; older fws can be untethered. Right now jailbreak me and redsn0w are the alternatives for 4.3.3 (not higher) for an untethered jb.

what else should I look for in specs listings besides the word untethered?
many things, firmware num.; Baseband number; SHSH saved, what model iPhone, etc

I recommend you read the stickys here in the hacks section and also go to www.iclarified.com for tutorials before asking more questions since no one wants to hand-hold anyone.

Regarding a tethered jailbreak, from the Dev Team:

“Tethered” does not mean you cannot boot at all without PC/Mac assistance. If you have not installed any tweaks that hook into important programs like SpringBoard or CommCenter, your device will actually boot. However, jailbreak programs like Cydia won’t work (and Cydia may still have a white icon). Also, certain built-in apps that had to be moved by Cydia will fail (Safari being the most noticeable example).

If you’ve installed MobileSubstrate tweaks that hook into SpringBoard or other important programs, your boot will actually fail (you’ll get stuck at the Apple logo). You need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered right now”.

The section in bold is crucial. A LOT of useful tweaks use Mobile Substrate, and you won't always know before you install them. You may not know afterwards either, unless you do the research. This can cripple your phone's functionality as a phone even until you can get to a computer with redsn0w installed. Then you'll need to cable the phone to the computer in order to get past the Apple logo--that's what a tethered jailbreak means.

My understanding (anyone please correct me if I'm wrong) is that you'll be doing this every time you merely turn the phone off. With iPhones, most of us merely put them into sleep mode, so that's not quite as bad as it sounds, but you need to be aware of it. Reboots are sometimes necessary to clear out the phone's memory cache--heck, we do that pretty regularly on my husband's stock iPad. You'd have to cable up to do that, every time.

A tethered jailbreak isn't the end of the world, but it's not the ideal either. If you're not familiar with jailbreaking, you really need to do some significant research before going any further, especially if you need to unlock the phone (or are buying anything other than a factory unlocked phone).

thanks for the links, before any chides me, I am spending time & money so you bet I will ask lots of questions, that is what one is supposed to do. & I have done some Google research, & have not found some of the answers yet, so I thought it would be ok to ask here, after all, this is a forum. I did look for a sticky & could not find it, I wish people had more patience with a newbie, not everyone is an expert.

no prob; people usually don't mind helping out if a person has at least tried to research on the subject. The stickies are right there on the top of the thread ;) https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/105/

when you get enough charge put in DFU mode and use redsn0w extras boot tethered! ;) btw running down your battery on a tethered JB isn't the best idea..
