My son has an iPhone on AT&T and a non-Apple laptop. He's in the service with no wifi at his base and would like to be able to Skype. I am wondering if tethering the iPhone to the laptop would produce a good enough connection to use Skype? And if so, how much data it might use? Thanks for the help.

I doubt it. The iphone's lag is usually around 0.2-0.3 secs, and add tethering, it might lag by 0.5 seconds or more. Also the upload is restricted to around 100 kbps, which is about 12 kilobytes per second. It will be extremely laggy.
