I have this Text Edit file for which I've kept an alias in my dock for ages. Recently I found that I couldn't make changes; it asks me to duplicate it. I tried moving it and now it resides in my Macintosh HD. I checked permissions for the file. I'm the administrator so I have Read & Write. I checked my Mac HD and only "system" has Read & Write privileges. I also cannot make changes to the Mac HD permissions (even if unlocked).

So my question is, if I'm the computer administrator and I've allowed myself permission to read & write the text edit file, what's keeping me from making changes to it? Is it because the Macintosh HD only allows "system" to make changes? I also tried moving the file to the documents folder but it only creates a copy.

Try this:

1. Open the "problem" text file
2. Type "command-A" (select all)
3. Type "command-C" (copy to clipboard)
4. Close the file
5. In Text Edit's menu choose "new"
6. A brand-new file will open
7. Type "command-V" (paste)
8. All your text should now appear in the new file
9. Save the new file with a name similar to the old one
10. Once the new file is saved, DELETE the problem file.
11. Put the new file where the old one was.
