This apparently has been going on for five years. I didn't realize that one company controlled the flow of nearly all text messages. I wonder if Apple was immune, since it supposedly handles its own messages, or whether it had subcontracted with this company:

Yes and no.

No, if one is communicating with someone that is a blue bubble. End to end encryption and is sent over data channel.

Yes, if green bubble, as that is a text message and sent as such. But not really Apple problem, as this is a carrier problem.
