Text Message Apps a good sub for Text Message plans?

I never tried any of the many free unlimited text message apps so I am not sure how they work.

I am wondering if anyone who has used them can tell me if they dropped their text message plan cause the app was a good enough replacement.

I have a iPhone 1st Gen and i really don't like the idea of spending an extra 15 bucks a month for the next 2 years so i can upgrade to the 3GS.
