Text message icon not showing new messages

My messaging app never shows when I have a new message, such as the red (1) that usually pops up in the right hand corner of the app. Does this happen to anyone else? and how can I fix this?

Are you jailbroken? Also, have you tried first restarting your iPhone? Something as dumb sounding as restarting fixes the majority of problems.
