My 13 pro max was on the 16 beta. About two weeks ago I tried deleting a text message thread from one contact. I hit delete and it kind of just blinked/refreshed and wouldn’t delete. I went into the thread with the contact and was able to delete all individual messages except ONE. I’m one of those weirdos that deletes messages and like a clean inbox. So this is driving me crazy to have one message that won’t go away that simply says “Ok”.

I’ve tried restarting and no luck. So I gave up and said well my 14 pro max is coming soon so I can deal with it for a bit. Set it up today and restored from backup and it still will not delete. I think my only option at this point is a restore and clean install.

I am checking here first to see if anyone has any suggestions before I do the restore. Such a weird glitch. I was working with Apple too and they just said to restore.

Getting the same problem for one specific message...did you find any solution?

Unfortunately I didn't and had to do a restore and set up the phone as new. Message was finally gone though!

Just read another similar thread a few minutes ago and sounds like it could be the same problem. His/her solution was to delete the deleted messages that Messages now keeps.

Crazy. I have no idea where to look for these deleted messages. And mine was a text and not an iMessage, I wonder if it would have worked in my case if I found the deleted messages?

It’s a new feature in iOS 16. Who knows if it would have worked, but iMessages and SMS messages are stored similarly in the same database. For future reference, here’s how to delete or recover deleted messages…
  1. In Messages, tap Edit.
  2. Tap Show Recently Deleted.
