Text messages failed to backup

Every time I've done a backup before, TNT phone has been restored as it was when I updated.

Just helped a friend to update his iPhone and none of the text messages have been restored. Calls, everything else yes. Text messages had completely disappeared.

that may have been a fluke, as ive never had that happen and its not like theres an option to turn that off. are you sure when the backup was done, there were indeed messages currently in the inbox?
