I have been texting a specific person using my iPhone for several years, and we have had a lot of lengthy conversations

A few days ago, I noticed that when I looked at our message history, it goes back 4 weeks and then stops. No messages previous to Feb 20th can be seen. This is only happening with one user in my message history, and I do see some messages from this person from last year in which other people were included (separate conversation).

I have tried everything to fix this, including doing a software update, and "reset all settings" on the phone. Has anyone ever seen this? could that user have somehow deleted parts of the conversation?

(strangely enough, as a side-note, my FB messenger history with the person also has an issue--it goes back exactly 6 weeks and nothing comes up before that. I have gone so far as to download all my FB data and look through the archives, old messages, etc., with no luck)

Could it be this setting under settings > messages -
