Text messages to iphone and other phone question

When I send a very long text message to another iphone it comes in as one long text message. On the other hand on other phones it gets split into lets say 5 text messages depending on the length of the message.

In a case like this and I charged for one text message or 5? I have 1500 text messages a month.

AT&T told me it was 5 texts. I didnt ever verify but decided if I exceeded 255 char five times over in a single text then I should be writing an email. ;)
