When my 4s is in screen lock: If I don't immediately "open" or acknowledge an incoming text message a second identical message comes in about 2 minutes later.

What is the consensus? Do people like this? Can I disable this feature? I'm not sure how I feel about the duplicate notification.

Try going into Settings, Notifications, Messages and set Repeat Alert to Never.

This should help.
