sorry for elementary question - recently converted pc user here...

whenever the cursor passes over any text or website, there is a voice that will announce what i have done. eg, i cursor over the safari icon; voice will say "safari". how do i turn off this feature. thanks.
 
You've probably turned on the built-in VoiceOver feature of OS X. Try navigating to System Preferences > Universal Access, then make sure that VoiceOver is turned off.
 
No worries. You're not alone, as it seems to happen more often then one might think. I chalk it up to the fun had while exploring all of the features of OS X, which is really the best way to familiarize yourself with the system.
