text tone for iphone 3gs

purchased a text tone thru itunes last night but not sure how to set it as a text tone for my texts rather than a ringtone. Anyone have any suggestions

Unfortunately that feature is not available on iOS 4 unless jailbroken.

For what it's worth, iOS 5 will allow you to set custom SMS tones (including songs, if formatted as m4r ringtone format).
