iPod touch Text tone question

I get the audible text tone to alert me of a message, but only the first time. If someone sends another comment within a few minutes, I don't get a text tone. It's like there is a time limit setting or something, but I can't find it. Anyone know how to tell it to ding every time I get a message? It's an ipod touch 4th gen. Thanks
