Textedit: selected style does not apply to whole line?

Suppose that I have a TextEdit style that changes the background colour.

When I apply this style to a line of text in Mojave whole line's background colour gets changed. On Ventura: only the selected text's background is being changed. The rest of the line remains untouched (unless I insert useless white space).

Any ideas to correct this?
