In Apple Watches set up in the standard way, you can always send iMessages from your cellular watch: even if your iPhone is not present. However, sending SMS requires your phone to be nearby.

Watches set up with Family Setup have no phone counterpart. They also require “standalone” cellular plans that are different from the normal watch plans so they get their own phone number.

Apple maintains a list of stuff that doesn’t work with Family Setup watches, and it doesn’t list SMS as being among those limitations.

Can anyone confirm whether or not this works?
