I got an iPad Air with 4G cellular… Does anyone know how you can make use of the free call and text possibilities…

I got an iPhone with 5G which I use for tethering and when doing so I can iMessage from any of my three iPads…(including the IPad Air when on WiFi/tethered) - but standalone there has to be a way to use at least the free texts from the cellular option? Anyone an idea ? or solution- calling from iPad (beside zoom or FaceTime ) is impossible… that I figured out already…

Apple didn't add native calling and SMS capabilities to iPad so the cellular function is for data only.

I have SMS forwarding enabled on my iPhone and I can send/receive SMS from the cellular iPad (using iPhone number) as long as the iPad has internet.

Me too… and it works well, but it’s a pitty not be able to use at least the “unlimited” text opportunity….
My iPad Air /cellular I use only when tethering is unpractical when I am somewhere and have to have access to data/files /pictures which are cloud based without messing about with brocken links between WiFi or tethering… just more practical and “professional “ when there are connection problem…

As others said… the cellular plan on iPad is data-only; no SMS or phone calls. The only options are to use a linked iPhone (which doesn’t need to be near you, it can stay at home as long as you have data) or use a 3rd party VoIP app.

I have no problem sending/receiving calls and messages when I enable Wifi calling. Of course, your ipad needs to be connected to a wifi network.

Nah. Any internet connection is fine including cellular data.

I’ve occasionally forgotten my iPhone at home and can still get calls and SMS via my cellular iPad mini and M1 12.9”. I believe there’s a 4- or 5-device limit for this feature.
