Texting from iphone to verizon friends

Hi so I have an iphone 3g and i text to friends all the time. However those on verizon will sometimes only get the second half of my message, or occasionally the first half. And sometimes there messages will come in two separate blocks, sometimes 5 mins apart. Any idea why this happens? Is there some delay between carriers?

regular phones only have certain amount of characters allowed in sms. if you send a long text from your iphone, the receiver's phone will break the message up usually into 2 texts, the last half being sent first. as far as the delay, my only explanation is verizon sucks. my family has verizon and theyre always complaining about reception/service.
